Maltese band Forsaken just keep releasing great albums. It’s no wonder they were voted best Maltese heavy metal band at this year’s MMAs. Their latest album After the Fall is rawer than its predecessor, albeit providing their own brand of melodic doom metal. The track Vanguards of the Void in particular captures the mood of the album, at once Christian and socially conscious of the ‘fall’ of the world.

Muse’s The Resistance is an albumcharacterised by diversity, technical wizardry and great songwriting. Its content ranges from uptempo rock to Queen-esque orchestrations. The hit single Uprising is certainly one of the band’s best songs and its shuffle-ridden tempo and eerie sounds fit perfectly with its rebellious lyrics.

Mastodon is the best of the ‘newer’ foreign heavy metal bands. Their sound is a welcome breath of fresh air, especially when compared to the blatantly overproduced and endlessly edited mechanical-sounding product of those ‘metal’ bands whose ultimate aim is simply to replicate each other. On Crack the Skye, Mastodon slows down the tempo and provides great songs with complex rhythms and unexpected turns.
